Sometime last month I visited our neighborhood library and checked out a few things. One of them being I Don’t Belong To You by Keke Palmer. In the beginning I didn’t really dedicate anytime to actually reading the books I checked out but I later decided to return the others and read one at a time. I chose to extend the rental for I Don’t Belong To You and I am glad that I did. The book itself is appealing to the eyes: full of fun colors, fonts, and emojis. Personally it started out as a slow read and I wasn’t too sure about it. But baby, after reading chapter three “The Good Girl/Bad Girl Myth” I am super excited to finish reading the book.
With that being said, today I want to talk about something I read in the third chapter of her book. Mind you, the entire third chapter is definitely a must read for all women. Anyway, she writes:
“We’re making the rules for ourselves, and we don’t have to be stuck or defined by one label. I don’t feel the need to define anything to anybody, because I’m always changing and I’m sure you are too. Who’s to say that I’m this or I’m that, when I might not want to be that or this tomorrow? I’m gonna follow my own feelings and my own heart.”
This isn’t only pertaining to women, it pertains to everyone. We as human beings are constantly changing, evolving, learning, and discovering new things. This means that the things you like, do, believe, and tolerate may change from month to month or even day to day. And the most important thing for you to remember is that that’s okay. Do not limit yourself or your growth by being stuck in the mindset of living up to the expectations and ways of others. I am who I am and what that looks like changes from moment to moment just as it does for you.
Follow your heart, follow your feelings.
