Sometime at the beginning of  last year menstrual cups sparked my interest. I began searching them in google and youtube like crazy. I mentioned it to someone and they did a little research and decided to purchase one. I have to admit that at the time I still had not ordered one because I was afraid the removal process would hurt. Not to mention I couldn’t even comfortably insert a tampon at the time. Even after seeing them insert and remove their menstrual cup numerous times, I still wasn’t ready to make the purchase.

Fast forward to November of 2019 and I finally made my menstrual cup purchase.

Disclaimer: this post is not a comparison on menstrual cups and should not serve as an end all be all on menstrual cups and whether or not you should use one (or this particular one).

I went into Target with plans on purchasing the pads and/or tampons by L. that I had fallen in love with and been using since the beginning of the year. I was unable to find the specific pack that I normally purchased and stumbled across the Saalt menstrual cup. I remember standing there going back and forth about whether to purchase the cup or not. Reminding myself how much money I could save in the long run pushed me to make the purchase.

So let’s get right to it,  based on my personal experience of using the Saalt menstrual cup for six months here are some pros and cons:

Disclaimer: There are many different types of menstrual cups. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. Depending on the brand the cups firmness, flexibility, and feel can vary because they can be made from various materials. So once again do not base your opinion solely off this post. Do a little research.

CONS

The cup can be difficult to insert correctly. If the cup is not inserted correctly the cup will not catch the blood and you will therefore bleed into your underwear.

Removing the cup can be difficult in the beginning. I cannot tell you how many different removal videos I had to watch on youtube before finally removing the menstrual cup for the first time. Lol The key was to relax.

PROS

You will save money in the long run – so the cup does cost $30 making it more expensive than pads and tampons which are already expensive; however, the Saalt cup can last up to 10 years with proper care. This means you buy the cup for a one time fee of $30 instead of purchasing period products every month. Even if you spend as little as $7/month on period products by the end of the year that’s $84 which means you save $54.

The Saalt cup can last up to 10 years with proper care. The cup does come with instructions on how to insert, remove, clean, and sanitize the cup. It also comes with a bag to store the cup when you’re not using it.

When the Saalt cup is inserted correctly it feels as if you are not even on your period. Almost like you can do anything. If inserted correctly you do not have to worry about bleeding through. It truly feels like nothing is there.

The cup only has to be changed every 12 hours. This is one of my favorite parts. You can insert the Saalt cup in the morning before work and will not need to empty it until sometime after you get home from work. I typically do it right before my shower. Then you can wear it the rest of the night and don’t have to worry about emptying it again until the morning. That’s right you will only have to change it twice a day.

As you can see, the cons for me are few, but the pros honey, I can go all day. Though I think I will stop here with the pros and cons of using the Saalt menstrual cup based on my six month experience.

Before I go, it is important that I mention once again that there are many different types of menstrual cups. I am saying this to say that this particular cup and/or brand will not work for everyone. Your cervix does need to sit in or right above the menstrual cup and everyone’s cervix is not in the exact same spot. So please do your research.

As always, feel free to leave a comment regarding the post. Let me know if you have been thinking of using a menstrual cup, if you would never use a menstrual cup, and if you do use a menstrual cup let me know the brand, how long, do you like it…I want to know it all.

  1. I just can’t see myself using this. Question: Do you urinate the same? I mean do you have to remove the cup to urinate?

    1. That’s how I was at first. I just kept watching videos though because I was so curious about them. Anyway, to answer your question you do not have to remove the cup to use the bathroom at all. This was one of my concerns (because public restrooms are usually disgusting and don’t have sinks in the stalls) since you would need to rinse it one you remove it.

  2. I LOVE menstrual cups! I’ve been a huge fan of them for about 4 years now. It’s true they can last up to 10 years but I usually buy a new one every year or so. They get discolored over time (naturally) so I just like for them to look clean lol. I use after trying DivaCup and Lena Cups I preferred the later. Maybe I’ll give these salt ones a try. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thank you for taking the time to read the post! 🙂
I love using one too! Yes, I have seen in videos and read that they will become discolored over time and would definitely purchase a new one when mine begins to as well. I was lucky enough to have purchased this one and it be a perfect fit for me in regards to size and comfort. It thankfully hasn’t started discoloring yet. Maybe ill look into those cups for my next purchase, I am thinking it would be great to have a few to alternate monthly.

  3. It’s so funny I was working on a post about menstrual cups because you actually put me onto them. I had always walked past them but never saw myself using one until the world got crazy and I couldn’t find tampons or pads. Although I’m still having trouble placing it correctly I do love my cup and like you said the fact that it’s saving me money.

    1. In a few months once you get it down you’ll be writing a “thank you covid19 quaratine” post for forcing you into a cup! lol

      2. How was the process of taking it out to empty? Was it a mess cleaning up for the first time ?

      3. Hey Cortney, thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and read a post! 🧡
No, removing it the first time did take me a minute to do but it didn’t make a mess. There was a very small amount of blood on the tip of my fingers but you just empty it right into the toilet and then rinse it out in the sink before reinserting it.
